Nash Jones, Bridge 13 Community Education Project Coordinator
The Sexual & Gender Minority Youth Resource Center (SMYRC)

Continental Breakfast & Networking at 8:00
Presentation at 8:30

According to a report of the National Transgender Discrimination Survey, 90% of trans people report experiencing harassment, mistreatment, or discrimination on the job. As a leader within your organization, you may be concerned about this staggering number, but unsure of how to begin to create a work environment that is safe, accessible, and responsive to trans and gender nonconforming employees. This training will provide participants insight into the identities and life experiences of trans and gender nonconforming people as well as tactics for creating a more equitable work environment for trans and gender nonconforming employees.

Whether you have little to no knowledge about trans identities or feel fairly informed about creating an inclusive workplace for trans employees, this training is for you. Participants will walk away with...

  • An understanding of the variety of identities that can fall under the ‘trans umbrella’ and how to use relevant terminology respectfully
  • New tools for thinking about gender more inclusively and for noticing the assumptions many of us make based on gender stereotypes and expectations
  • Tangible skills for improving the inclusivity of their workplace for trans employees and colleagues in the short- and long-term

This work often requires multiple levels of commitment, which this training can prepare leaders to be aware of and plan for.

    About the Presenter

Nash Jones currently serves as Program Coordinator of The Bridge 13 Community Education Project at SMYRC, The Sexual and Gender Minority Youth Resource Center. As the lead trainer, Nash has facilitated upwards of 130 trainings on LGBTQ cultural responsiveness in and around Oregon’s Tri-County area. For several years, in conjunction with facilitating trainings, Nash held a staff role in the drop-in center at SMYRC, working with and being inspired by queer and trans young people. Nash now brings their passion for standing with and advocating for youth aged folks into their work as a community educator when working with youth providers. Nash is currently the Chair of the Gender Inclusive Spaces Committee at Portland Community College, and has also served as the Coordinator of the Queer Resource Center on the Rock Creek campus. Nash has provided in-depth consultation on matters of trans cultural responsiveness, and was a co-creator and teacher's assistant for a first-of-its-kind graduate level course addressing trans and genderqueer clinical topics for Masters in Counseling students.

Nash holds a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology and Sociology from Lewis & Clark College. Nash believes deeply in the role that community education can play in motivating people into action, awakening empathy, building alliances, and developing robust and accessible community resources. As a facilitator, Nash aims to be approachable and responsive; they work to create a learning environment where folks feel challenged and encouraged to engage with the material and safe to misstep.

    About the Network

Most nonprofit leaders want to create inclusive work environments, address social and economic disparities, and engage diverse communities in their programing, yet the path to achieve greater equity is not always clear, and the work can be isolating. Equity and Inclusion Leaders Network brings nonprofit leaders together to share best practices, connect among peers, and engage in deeper learning with thought leaders and practitioners in the field of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
