Nonprofits & Advocacy: Afternoon Session (Nonmembers)

High-impact nonprofits advocate on behalf of the mission and constituents they serve. Nonprofit advocacy demonstrates a commitment to their missions, as well as to civic engagement in strengthening their communities. Nonprofits are on the frontline of today’s most pressing issues—poverty, education, healthcare, and the environment, to name a few—and that lead position brings perspective and knowledge that can critically inform public policy.
To be effective in accomplishing their missions, it is essential for nonprofits to understand their rights and responsibilities for advocacy and public policy. Join GRANTMAKERS of Oregon and Southwest Washington, the Nonprofit Association of Oregon, and Alliance for Justice, the national leader in providing informative and entertaining trainings on the rules of advocacy for nonprofit organizations, for this half-day workshop. Attorney-trainers will teach you the rules and local nonprofit leaders will share opportunities and ideas for effectively advocating on behalf of your mission.
This fun and engaging workshop will feature the following:
- Overview of the nonprofit sector and what it does
- What is advocacy, and why should nonprofits be engaged in it?
- Lobbying rules for nonprofits: What is allowed, state level, federal level, coalitions, ballot measures, elections, and record keeping
- How to have a policy dialogue with your Board: Identifying issues, assessing the Board’s role, and moving forward
- Advocacy and policy resources
- Plenty of time for questions!
About the Presenters
Daren Garshelis is Counsel with the Alliance for Justice West Coast office. He works on AFJ’s Nonprofit Advocacy Project, assisting nonprofit organizations in expanding their capacity to influence public policy. Daren comes to AFJ with a strong background providing pro bono legal assistance.
Prior to joining AFJ, he worked in New York City at Paul, Hastings, Janofsky and Walker LLP, where, in addition to practicing complex commercial litigation, he represented a Guatemalan juvenile asylum-seeker in immigration court. At El Centro de Educación de Trabajadores, he provided free legal consultations in Spanish to underserved members of the community. As a law student at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, Daren aided Spanish-speaking immigrants in removal proceedings with the Capitol Area Immigrant Rights Coalition and the National Coalition for Refugee and Immigrant Children.
Elizabeth Grant is the Attorney-in-Charge of the Charitable Activities Section at the Oregon Department of Justice. She joined the Department in 2003. Prior to that, she worked for approximately twelve years as an attorney in the Division of Marketing Practices in the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection in Washington, DC. While at the FTC, she developed and litigated federal enforcement actions involving deceptive and unlawful business practices. Ms. Grant graduated magna cum laude from Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon.
Since 2009 Mark Langseth has been the President and Chief Executive Officer of “I Have A Dream” Foundation, which with a budget of $2.1 million helps low-income kids succeed in school and college. Mr. Langseth moved to Portland from Minneapolis in 2006 to take the position of Assistant Vice President for University Development at Portland State. He has extensive experience in K-12 and higher education and was active in the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits when he lived in Minneapolis. He is also a frequent speaker and author on education-related topics.
Jim White serves as Executive Director of NAO, where he works collaboratively with a statewide Board of Directors, staff, strategic partners, and the nonprofits across Oregon to build a more visible, influential, and resilient nonprofit sector in Oregon. Jim ensures NAO’s effectiveness by providing strategic, operational, ethical, and inspirational leadership that is consistent with the mission, values, policies, and contractual obligations of the organization.
Prior to joining NAO, Jim worked in the nonprofit sector both domestically and internationally for more than 17 years. Most recently, he served as a senior manager with Mercy Corps. He is deeply committed to social change and has a passion for affecting systemic change in the way that the public, private, and nonprofit sectors work together to support and strengthen civil society. Throughout his career, Jim has worked on some of the most difficult humanitarian and development challenges of our times, in countries like Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan, and North Korea. He is specifically skilled on working to build alliances and partnerships so that communities and organizations have a voice in the issues that are most important to them. He has also worked for the International Organization for Migration and the American Red Cross. Jim earned a BS in Engineering Technology from Temple University and an MA in Central Eurasian Area Studies from Indiana University.
