Presenter
Marc Smiley, Principal, Solid Ground Consulting

The board sets policy and the staff implements policy, right? Well, yes. And no. It’s not as easy as that.

Nearly every nonprofit organization with professional staff has at times struggled with the clear roles that board and staff members play as a team. Many of the notions of how to divide up the work don’t work. Some can cause real damage. Every nonprofit that has professional staff needs to be clear about the lines of authority and lines of communication that best foster a strong, sustainable team. They also need the tools to unwind and repair organizational structures that conflict with best practices on board-staff roles.

This workshop will work through the sometimes thorny issue of board and staff lines of authority using best practice principles, interesting stories and insightful suggestions on putting them to work. Participants can expect a highly interactive and relevant workshop, and to leave with clear understand and useful tools to support effective structure for their group.

NEW Flash Consulting Sessions Available!

Fund development consultants Clarinda Hanson White and James Phelps will be available for complimentary 10-minute "flash" consulting sessions during the networking portion of this event. Availability is limited and offered on a first come first served basis.
